Lost in Vocalization

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

I went to a Japanese restaurant and had this conversation:

Me: Maguro Sushi and a tuna hand roll.
Sushi guy: What kind of hand roll?
Me (in head): I thought I gave him enough info. I’ll just say tuna again. If that’s not what he needs to know, he’ll make it known.
Me: Tuna

A short time later,  he serves me my maguro and says something about my “tu-tuna hand roll” coming a bit later.

At least that’s how I interpreted it. I figured he was just stumbling over the word.

Then I started to put 2 and 2 together, and realized he heard “Maguro Sushi and two hand roll”. I guess because between the two of us, I’d be the likely one to commit subject-verb disagreement.  In fact, I’m quite certain he didn’t say “two tuna hand rolls, because that would have been my clue before anything got started.

I ended up getting and eating both, but I didn’t care.  He actually ended up giving me a spicy tuna+avocado roll on the house.

Priorities

Monday, February 12th, 2007

In order to take my real estate exam, I have to call the Promissor Rserveration Center to make a reservation. These are the menu choices on the phone system:
1) Directions to test center
2) Request a duplicatte copy of score report
3) Info on testing center closings
4) Any other questions or Reservations

Apparently, they don’t get many reservations on the Reservation line. Hopefully the next time I call, their message will start “Please listen to the following options, because they made no sense before.”

Ah the Internet

I keep promising myself that I’m not going to read IMDb discussion boards anymore, because of all the stupid arguments and games that go on there. I somehow manage to find myself reading them…

I think I just found the motivation to stay away, on the board for Matt Dallas who plays the titular (tee hee) role on ABC’s new show “Kyle XY”.

If you don’t have an IMDB login, the initial post says:
Matt Dallas just started playin KYLE XY- i saw on the preview that KYLE XY doesnt have a belly button..does Matt Dallas have one and there just covering it up for the show?? or does he really not have one?

Untargeted advertising

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

At work, I use the “sponsored” version of Eudora, which is free but has a small window showing the ad for a sponsor’s product (usually stuff at Amazon). This product just appeared in my Eudora ad window.

If I’m too cheap to spring for a paid version of Eudora, do they really think I’m going to buy that?

Great moments in self-entertainment

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

We had a little shindig at my boss’s new house, half of which is not heated (one furnace isn’t working or something). Someone saw a small box on the wall, and wondered what it was (alarm system panel or thermostat):
Someone: It’s a thermostat.
Someone else: Ah, well it may as well be an alarm system.
Me: Or that computer on Lost
Someone else: Huh?
Me: Never mind. That was for my amusement only.
Someone else: Oh….was it amusing?
Me: Yes, it was very clever.

Everything’s…well, you know….

Today was a day for technology to go apeshit on me.

  • This morning, my mouse would not scroll while in firefox. After a bit, it would scroll up but not down. Finally (magically), it worked. Yay!
  • The last few days, my phone’s Bluetooth seemed to stop working. No connection to my car or my PowerBook. I tried removing the battery, etc. to no avail. I deleted the pairing with my PowerBook and tried to recreate it. the Bluetooth pref pane wasn’t loading at this point, so i tried connecting with my Palm. Nuh uh.

So I decided to go to Cingular to see what they say. I got in the car…..”Bluetooth connection successful”. Well that really throws a wrench in things…in a good way. I got back to my desk and shut down the computer. Upon restart, I was able to pair the phone, and all was well.

    The End.

  • firefox scroll wheel font size changer disable

    Thursday, April 6th, 2006

Firefox changes font sizes when you command-scroll. It’s sooooo annoying and I turned it off once before, but had to do it again after getting my ‘Book back from Apple.

Here’s the solution I finally dug up (again). I’m putting it here so I don’t forget it again, and hopefully make it easier for someone else to find.

To turn if off, go to about:config, and change
    mousewheel.withmetakey.action to 0
    mousewheel.withmetakey.sysnumlines to true.

    O&A Party Rock!

    Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

I’ve been an XM subscriber for about a year and most of my listening has been to shhhhhhockjocks Opie & Anthony. Their shows are now available via audible.com, which offers the following advantages:

    • Absolute convenience - no need to set up scheduled records, and best of all…
    • Audible subscriptions are available as a podcast, so they automatically download to iTunes when ready.
    • Pause, rewind, and fast forward (obviously)
    • Anytime I need to mute the sound emanating from my computer, my hand hits the keyboard shortcut for pausing iTunes. Unless i’m listening to something in iTunes, this will launch iTunes and start playing something; the exact opposite of the desired effect. Now if I’m listening to O&A, it “does the right thing.”

I think these guys are worth the double-payment I’m currently paying. I’ll probably cancel XM at some point. Since AOL Radio has some XM channels, the only thing I’d be missing (not available anywhere else) is XM Comedy.

    XM Funnies

    Tuesday, September 28th, 2004

Hurray! XM Radio is soon going to offer an Internet-based service.

Also, here’s a funny thread about what people have seen on their XM displays (which are limited to either 10 or 16 characters for each artist or title.
